I lived in Japan for a few years, and I have travelled here numerous times in the past few years. Somewhere along the way, I was told or somehow believed that this soft bright white bread I was enjoying was healthier because it was made from rice.

The truth I discovered while preparing to expound on the merits of this sort-of paleo friendly bread is that I have, in fact, been living a lie. This bread is made from wheat.

Google translate has a great feature that allows one to use their camera to translate foreign writing from packaging and signs. I used this tool for the first time to see what details I could learn about this amazing rice bread, and I learned, to my surprise, that it is made from wheat.

The packaging exclaims across the front that the bread is fluffy and that the wheat uses fermentation for leavening. It’s not rice bread at all. I had to laugh at myself for this one, but it is good to know the truth behind this delicious and tasty bread. Unfortunately, I’m trying to avoid wheat right now so I won’t be enjoying anymore of this bread on this trip.
