Dehydrated peas is something I have mostly only enjoyed when covered in wasabi flavoring. In my continued effort to explore my convenient-store food circumstances while here in Japan, I tried this snack treat from the extremely expansive crunchy snack aisle at Lawsons.
I will admit the packaging did play a role in my decision to try this snack. While the cover photography does not portray an especially interesting or delightful looking dish, the delightful level of cuteness makes it seem friendly enough to be enjoyed.
Was it fun in a bag? No. But it also wasn’t not enjoyable. It’s like eating crunchy pebbles with an unexpectadly vacant flavor pop. Definitely nailed it on the texture aspect, but the flavor component only gets points for not being offensive. And by not offensive, I don’t mean good; just not bad.
Would I eat them again? Sure. When abroad often times a “not unpleasant” experience is usually worth noting as a win. International flavors can be shocking to the point that having one that is not shocking is sometimes all that can be expected. And since I don’t read enough Japanese to really have any idea what I’m looking at as I browse the shelves, I do often go by pictures and experience to make my food selections.
Snacks are a very safe space to experiement in when it comes to Japanese food. They are typically crunchy and usually savory, although that might just be because those are the snacks I typically gravitate to. The sea does often play a role in the flavor profile of most things here, but this time seemed to be one of those exceptions.
