Yes, you read that correctly: fish and almonds. Salted mini sardines and almonds is a popular and common snack staple in Japan.

When the mixture hits your mouth, it is kind of comparable to swallowing a handful of small twigs, but it bites down without injury because everything in the package is stiff but easily chewed.

The flavor is a great mix of the saltiness of the seet with the sweetness of the tree nuts. The almonds and the sardines are a brilliant combination if you can get passed the stare of the fish.

This is a popular snack because it does have big nutritional value packed into such a small food quantity; comparable to a snack bar or an otsumami.

This is not my favorite snack but it is not as offensive to the palette as one might guess. It really is just the glazed stare of the eyes that mae this snack a challenge for me, but it’s a challenge worth taking.
