I have lived a very full life, and had the opportunity to do a lot of fun things. And now that I’m in farm school, I’m doing more fun things like operating this front-loader tractor implement to load wood chips into the back of a work truck.

I don’t know why it is so incredibly fun for me to operate large machinery, but it is. Just like when little kids get excited at “Touch a Truck” events, I get super excited every time I get to operate any kind of equipment at Farm School. The trade-off is I spend a lot of time doing hands on dirty work too, but there are those special moments when I get to drive a tractor and fulfill a boyhood dream of scooping and dumping.

Farm School for me is both daunting in the endless stream of introduction to things I don’t know coupled with these kinds of moments where I get to fulfill a desire that my inner child has been toting around all this time. Farming is a lot of hard work, but it is also fun because in a lot of ways that hard work is more like play than it is like the drudgery of everything else I have come to know as work. Getting dirty out in the fields, and getting to drive the big machines from time to time is not what I expected from this time in my life (but it is many of the things I had forgotten that I wanted).
